George was the son of James A. Ennis and Esther Yarnell Ennis. He was the eldest and of at least eight children born in Philadelphia in 1894. James was a police officer in Philadelphia.

According to his World War I draft registration card, George worked as a Hatter for the J. B. Stetson Company. He was described as slender, about 5'7" with brown hair.

George also registered for the World War II draft and on that notice, he is still listed as working for the J.B. Stetson Company. There is a notation on the registration form that he has an artificial right limb.

In 1919 George married Agnes and they had two children - Delmer in 1925 , who would go on to be a professional baseball player with the home town Philadelphia Phillies, and George, born in 1932. According to the articles about Delmer's signing with the Phillies, George was the manager of a local team - called the Straw Hat Stetson's - and was instrumental in getting his son to sign the recruitment papers.

George died in Philadelphia in 1981 at the age of 87.
