His grandfather, Willis D Ennis, was a wealthy slaveowner. However, he lost everything after the Civil War. His father established a hotel in Bowling Green Kentucky. Willis was a stoneworker in Missouri and then a foreman on the tool section at the railroad Roundhouse at the end of Seventh St. on San Francisco Bay. The old red electric trains used to drop people off there to take the ferry over to the city to work. He invented a train signal, but did not receive anything for it because he developed it on company time. His father, when Willis was 8 years old, took him to see Geronimo when he was captured.
