Biography

Johann Georg Enßlin was the youngest child of Johann Georg and Barbara (Hockmaier) Enslin, born when his mother was 44 years old.[1] He married Anna Margaretha in Tübingen in 1698 and the marriage record states that he was the son of "Johann Georg Ensslin, deceased tradesman in Urach."[2] Johann Georg and Anna Margaretha remained in Tübingen where the first of eleven children was born the following year. Johann Georg is always referred to as "Herr Johann Georg Enßlin, Handelsmann," in the baptismal records of his children. His death record in the Tübingen Church records state that he was a Kupfer-Factorie (copper manufacturer) und Handelsman in Tübingen. His age is given as 58 years, eight months and 20 Days. [3] This conforms to his February, 1675 birthdate, found in the records of Urach.[4]

  4. It appears that most German genealogists who researched the Enslin family or were researching the ancestors of G. W. F. Hegel, relied too much on Faber, who suggested a 1659 birthdate for Johann Georg and neglected to check the Urach church records for a more accurate account.
