Ann Ensor, daughter of John ENSOR, collarmaker of Sherborne, Dorset, and Mary née DENNIS was baptised 1 May 1778 at Sherborne, Dorset.[1] She married Robert GUMBLETON on 7 Sep 1796 at Sherborne.[1] At the time he was a shopman in grocer's shop in Sherborne, initially owned by Simon Pretor, but recently sold to John and William Ensor, Ann's brothers.
They moved to Ilchester, Somerset, where Robert Gumbleton acquired his own grocer's and general stores in the town. They had their first 4 children between 1798 and 1803 in the town.[2] However, in 1805 they were back in Sherborne, and baptised their 5th child, Elizabeth, on the 18th October.[1] They must have sold the business in Ilchester at around this time so perhaps they stayed with the Ensors while Robert Gumbleton found a new business.
This stay in Sherborne must have been short-lived, and they moved to Deal, Kent. Her husband gave his home as Deal in January 1806.[3]
In 1811, her brother and sister-in-law, William and Tabitha ENSOR were in Deal: their son Thomas Shaw ENSOR was baptised there on 11 Jan 1811. Also in 1811, Robert Gumbleton was on the verge of bankruptcy and his assets were assigned to his creditors, with the business continuing for the benefit of Mrs Gumbleton.[3]
In 1813, Ann's mother died, leaving her a one-seventh share of her property (less money already loaned to Ann and her brother William).[4]
In 1821, Mrs Gumbleton was living in Broad Street. The family consisted of 1 male and 4 females.[5] This was probably Josiah (12), Mary (18), Elizabeth (15), Maria (9) and Ann herself. Her son, Richard, would have been 20 and was probably apprenticed elsewhere.
From 1823 to 1829, Ann's daughter Mary was a straw hat manufacturer in Broad Street, Deal.[6] By 1832, Mary was a milliner and dressmaker in High Street, Hampstead. It seems likely that Ann had also moved with her to Hampstead by this stage: certainly she was living in Heath Street, Hampstead, by 1841, and was listed as a milliner, along with her three daughters. An 1837 Sun Fire Insurance policy names a milliners called Gambleton [sic] in Hampstead.
In 1850 she was mentioned in the will of her brother Thomas, with her three daughters receiving mourning rings. In 1851 and 1861, she was still living in Heath Street, Hampstead. She died there on 24 Nov 1861. She was aged 83 and died of chronic cough some years, water on the chest and general debility.[7] A brief death notice was published in The Times and in The Examiner.[8] She was buried in Highgate cemetery.[9]
