Biography

Thompson married Mary Epperson on 22 Sept 1782 in Amhearst County, Virginia. Mary states in her pension application that "she has no record of her marriage and knows of no person living who can prove the same except Johnson Isreal, of Buncombe County, North Carolina, if he is still alive. [1]
1776 Project
Private Thompson Epperson served with Virginia Line during the American Revolution.

Private Thomas Epperson served in the American Revolution under Capt. Pleasant Henderson, attached to Col. Joseph Williams of Surry County Regiment. [2] He was living in Surry County, and then moved to Washington County. In 1780, he was a Private under Capt. Benjamin Clark and Col. Evan Shelby, Sr. In 1782, he was a Private under Capt. Amos Bird and Col. John Sevier. He service in the Wilkes County Regiment from 1779 to 1782.[3]

Private Thompson served in the American Revolution. First in VA Unit. In the Wilkes County North Carollina Regiment in 1780, a Private under Capt. Moses Guest and Col. Benjamin Cleveland. Moved back to VA. Born in 1757 in Albermarle, County, VA. [4]

<tab> "That he [Thompson Epperson] entered the service of United States in Albermarle County Virginia in the year 1777 under Captain Robert Harris, was marched to Williamsburg where he was placed under the Command of General Nelson [Thomas Nelson.] Thence we marched to Little Hampton; thence back to Albermarle & was discharged by Captain Harris for a tour of duty. he then removed to Wilkes County North Carolina & entered the service under Captain Moses Guess [Moses Guest] in the Horse Company & served from June 1780 until January 1781 & was at the Battle of King's Mountain [October 7, 1780]. Service with Captain Guest aforesaid six months and was dismissed I Captain guest.
<tab>In January 1781 he removed back to Virginia & in July 1781 he again entered the service in Albermarle County under Captain John Martin & was marched to Richmond Virginia and placed under the command of the Marquis of Lafayette, and was marched to the neighborhood of Williamsburg and was there discharged by Captain Martin & Colonel Richardson [probably Holt Richeson] for a tour of tow or three months, does not recollect which. He served two tours of duty in Virginia, but does not recollect whether they were two or three months tours consequently does not recollect whether altogether he served 10 months or one year.

  1. Was born about the year 1757 in Albemarle County Virginia.
  2. Does not know that there is any record of his age.
  3. When he entered the service he lived in Albemarle County Virginia, removed as aforesaid to North Carolina & back. After the War he removed to Wilkes county North Carolina lived there about five years & in 1790 removed to his present residence in Georgia.
  4. He was drafted for both tours in Virginia & in North Carolina he was a volunteer."[5]

Thompson resided in Wilkes North Carolina between the years 1784 to 1787[6]

Thompson is found in the Franklin, Georgia 1830 U.S. Census[7]

Thompson and Mary has the following children:

  2. Hannah Watkins b 1787 in Wilkes County, NC
  3. George b 1790
  4. John b 1793 in Franklin, Georgia
  5. Catharine Griffin b 1795 in Franklin, Georgia
  6. Thompson b 1797 in Franklin, Georgia
  7. Charles b 1803 in Franklin, Georgia

These children were listed in Mary's pension application as her only surviving children. The year born was calculated from the pension application by James L. Gillespie, administrator of the estate, listing the ages of her children on March 11, 1852 [1]
