Gunny grew up with 5 brothers in Emporia, Kansas. At age 14, he moved with his family to Zillah, Washington.

Ermey married his wife, Nila, in 1975. They had four children. In Ermey's television show Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey, he referred to his wife as "Mrs. Gunny". He was also the official celebrity spokesperson of the youth organization Young Marines.
