Biography

James Milton Erskine was born on June 21, 1822 in South Carolina. He was the son of William E. Richard Erskine and Sarah Shirley. [1] [2]

The 1830 Federal Census listed James Milton, age 8 (Males - 5 thru 10) as living with his father William, age 40 (Males - 40 thru 49), his mother Sarah, age 31 (Females - 30 thru 39), his brother William Washington, age 5 (Males - 5 thru 10) and his sisters Drucilla Emiline, age 10 (Females - 10 thru 14), Margaret Elizabeth, age 3 (Females - Under 5), Martha Luisa, age 1 (Females - Under 5), in Anderson, South Carolina. [3]

James' mother Sarah passed away before the 1840 Census.

The 1840 Federal Census listed James Milton, age 18 (Males - 15 thru 19) as living with his father William, age 50 (Males - 50 thru 59), his brother William Washington, age 15 (Males - 10 thru 14) and his sisters Drucilla Emiline, age 20 (Females -15 thru 19), Margaret Elizabeth, age 13 (Females - 10 thru14), Martha Luisa, age 10 (Females - 5 thru 9), Sarah Jane, age 4 (Females - Under 5) and Nancy Lettice age <1 (Females- Under 5) in Anderson, Anderson, South Carolina. [4]

The 1850 Federal Census listed James as living with John W. Guyton, a Sheriff, and his family in the Eastern Subdivision, Anderson, South Carolina. His occupation was listed as farmer. His brother William Washington was listed as a laborer on an adjacent farm. His father William, a farmer, and his step-mother Elizabeth, his sisters Martha Louisa, Mary Caroline, Sarah Isabella Jane and Nancy Lettice were living on a different adjacent farm. [5]

James Milton Erskine married Margaret Olive McAllister circa 1852 probably in Anderson, South Carolina.

On January 10, 1866, James entered into an agreement to employ one freedman named Parks (a man who has been freed from slavery) in South Carolina, Anderson District. James had to furnish Parks a good house to live in and firewood and let him have what land he could clear off, ready fenced and have all he makes off it .......[6]

The 1870 Federal Census listed James as living with his wife Margaret, his daughters Sarah Isabella Jane, Palmyra Olive A. and Julia Estelle and his sons William Barr, Pickens Cater Erskine, Lucius Baker and Leland Donely in Hopewell Township, Anderson, South Carolina. His occupation was listed as farmer. [7]

The 1880 Federal Census listed James as living with his wife Margaret, his daughter Julia Estelle and his sons Pickens Cater and Lucius Baker in Centerville Township, Anderson, South Carolina. His occupation was listed as farmer. [8]

James prepared a Will on January 1, 1897 in Anderson County, South, Carolina. [9]

The 1900 Federal Census listed James as living with his wife Margaret in Centerville Township, Anderson, South Carolina. His occupation was listed as farmer. [10]

James passed away on May 21, 1903 in Anderson County, South Carolina at age 80. He was buried in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Anderson, Anderson, South Carolina. [11]

The will was probated on June 4, 1903 in Anderson County, South Carolina. [12]
