Biography

Robert Erskine is a member of Clan Erskine.

Sir Robert Erskine of that Ilk was the son of Sir William Erskine of that Ilk.[1]

He married, firstly, Beatrice de Lindsay, daughter of Sir Alexander de Lindsay.[1] They had issue:

  1. Thomas[1]
  2. Nicholas[1]
  3. Marion[1]

He married, secondly, Christian Menteith, daughter of Sir John Menteith, Lord of Arran and Helen of Mar, in 1352. [1] They had no surviving issue.[1]

He died in 1385.

He held the office of Constable of Stirling Castle and was the Scottish Ambassador to England. He held the office of High Chamberlain of Scotland between 1350 and 1357, and again from 1363 to 1364. In 1368 he was granted a royal charter granting Alloa to himself in exhcnage for Strathgartney.

At Stirling on 23 March 1358/59 Sir Robert received a charter of King David II granting him a third part of the revenue of the burgh of Dundee and a third part of the nearby lands of Pitkerro.[2]

The following year on 18 November 1360 Sir Robert Erskine of that ilk and Dun bequeathed two chaplains to the altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brechin Cathedral 10 marks annually from the revenues of the burgh of Dundee and five marks from Pitkerro for the good of his soul, that of his spouse Christian Keith, for the soul of his late wife Beatrice and for the souls of his parents. [3] Here he was designed of Dun, his lands near Brechin.

Richardson states that Robert had 'no surviving issue' with his second wife yet there are two children linked to her.

Sir William Fraser, author of Chiefs of Colquhoun and Their Country Vol. I, wrote that Sir John Colquhoun married Jean, daughter of Robert Lord Erskine, who was a co-heir with Lyle of Duchal of the ancient Earls of Mar.

Does anyone know who this Lyle of Duchal was, and how Robert Erskine was a co-heir with him? It might be a different Robert Erskine.
