Naomi was born on August 12, 1812[1] in Maryland.[2][3][4] According to Benjamin G. Shinn:[5]
John Ervin was prominent among the early settlers [of Blackford, Indiana]. His early life was spent in Maryland; then he lived in Perry county, Ohio, and came here in 1837. He was married twice, his wives being half sisters. There were five children by the first wife and eight by the second. The oldest, Naomi, married Hamilton Wheatcraft, and after his death she married Nicholas Friend, the first sheriff of Blackford county.
Naoma Groen married Daniel Wheatcraft on May 31, 1832, in Perry, Ohio.[6] He died Oct. 10, 1833,[7] the same year that David Wheatcraft was born[8] in Ohio.[2]
On April 7, 1840, Naomi Wheatcraft married Nicholas Friend in Blackford, Indiana.[9] The 1850 census shows David H. Wheatcraft (now age 17) living with Nicholas Friend (age 46, birthplace Ohio) and Nancy Friend (age 38, birthplace Maryland) in Huntington, Indiana.[2] Also shown are children John F. (age 9), Samuel (age 7), James (age 5), and William M. (age 1), all with the last name Friend and a birthplace of Indiana.[2] Nicholas Friend died on December 3, 1857 , in Jasper, Iowa.[10]
The 1860 census shows Naomi Friend living in Malaka, Jasper County, Iowa, with children John (age 18), Samul [sic] (age 16), James (age 14), Wm (age 12), Mary Jane (age 9), Rebecca E. (age 4), all with the last name Friend and a birthplace of Indiana, except for Naomi's, which is again shown as Maryland.[3]
The 1870 census shows Naomi Friend at age 51 [sic] living in Adair, Maryland with William (age 21) and Rebecca (age 15, now shown with a birthplace of Iowa).[4]
On September 8, 1871, at age 59, Naomi married Lemuel R. Williams in Adair, Missouri.[11] She died on July 8, 1878, and was buried in Kirksville, Missouri.[1] Lemuel Williams died on December 27, 1904, and was buried beside her.[12]
Combining the above information, the children of Naomi were:
With Daniel Wheatcraft (1802-1833):
With Nicholas Friend:
As highlighted in italics above, the record of a marriage to Daniel Wheatcraft showed him marrying Naoma Groen, not Naomi Ervin.[6] This was not a mistranscription of the image:
I have found no evidence that Naomi had a prior husband with the last name Groen (although, at age 20, she could have a prior marriage). Shinn claimed that Naomi married Hamilton Wheatcraft. I found unsourced claims that his name was Daniel Hamilton Wheatcraft and his son is David Hamilton Wheatcraft.[13] (The latter appears as David H. Wheatcraft in the 1850 census.[2]
The 1850 census has the name Nancy Wheatcraft:[2]
Because the information in it is so consistent with the 1860 census, which identifies the head of the household as Naomi Friend (having the appropriate age, birthplace, and children),[3] and because she married Nicholas Friend in 1840,[9] it seems likely that her first name was misentered in the 1850 census.
There are many unsourced claims that Naomi's middle name was Jane,[1] but I have not found any records to that effect.
