Biography

Robert Bankston Joseph Erwin (as named in his will) was born in Alabama 1 Oct either 1842 or 1848 and lived in the Hatchett Creek District when he married Sarah Ann Kelley (1844-1883). Robert and Sarah had 4 sons and 4 daughters as follows: James Lee “Jim”, Francis “Frank” M, David Dell, John Wiley, Jane Susan Rebecca “Janie”, Emma, Ellen “Ella”, and Mary A.. Sarah died shortly after she gave birth to her last child, possibly from complications of childbirth. Robert married Elvira Pascovia Selvage, called Patty, and they had 1 son and 4 daughters as follows: Malinda Victoria “Millie”, Mattie Elizabeth (1894-1978), George Robert, Kathryn “Kittie”, and Evie Lee Erwin. Robert was captured during the Civil War somewhere near Horse Pens 40 and was used as a farrier to shod and care for the horses of the Northern troops. After the war he managed the federal mail route between Gadsden, Alabama City, and Ashville AL. His family managed the stagecoach inn in Alabama City and the mail service continued until streetcars and other ways of carrying the mail became more popular. Robert died on 14 March 1922 and is buried in Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden AL.

  • 1900 United States Federal Census Robert Erwin age 55, living in Old Town, St. Clair Alabama, married to Pascora (Elvira Pascovia Selvage was her correct name). Children listed were David (from his first marriage), Malinda, Mattie and George.
  • 1920 United State Federal Census. Robert Erwin age 79, living on Samson Ave, Alabama City, Etowah Alabama, married to Elvira (Elvira Pascovia Selvage was her correct name). Listed in the household was their daughter Mattie and her daughter, Catherine, and sons George, and Joseph Roy Argo.
