William grew up on the farm near Pense, west of Regina, Saskatchewan.
He served in WWI with the Royal Air Force and became a bomber pilot; he was discharged in England on Apr. 16, 1918 with his Military Character rated as very good.
He married Ethel Mae Martin in 1922; in 1926, they lived near the home farm at Pense.
During WWII he was a flight instructor.
