He succeeded his father as Duca di Modena e Reggio, Principe del Sacro Romano Imperio, Principe Sovrano di Carpi, 3rd Marchese di Montecchio e Signore di Sassuolo on 11 December 1628, but abdicated in favour of his eldest surviving son, Francesco I in 1629. He became a Friar Minor of Capuchin order (under the name of Frà Giambattista da Modena) 8 September 1629.
