Obizzo, III, d'Estes, Marquess of Ferrara (1294–1352)

Death: 20 Mar 1352 • Ferrara, Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Spouse: Lippa Ariosto (1310–1347)
Obizzo was Lord of Ferrara together with his brothers Rinaldo and Niccolò, and his cousin Folco II, but ultimately became sole ruler. He managed and enlarged the family holdings with the conquests of Modena (1336) and Parma (1344–1346).
In May 1317 Obizzo m. (1) Giacoma (d. 1341), daughter of Romeo de' Peppoli from Bologna. There was no issue.
In 1347 Obizzo m. (2) Lippa Ariosti, known as la Bella and his long-time mistress. The marriage took place shortly before Lippa's death on 27 November 1347 in order to legitimize their several children:
  1. Beatrice d'Este¤ (18 September 1332 - 1387), m. 1365 Waldemar I, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. No issue.
  2. Alda d'Este (18 July 1333 - 1381), m. 1356 to Ludovico II Gonzaga
  3. Rinaldo d'Este (10 October 1334 – 20 July 1348), died young.
  4. Aldobrandino III d'Este (14 September 1335 - 2/3 November 1361).
  5. Alisia d'Este (18 March 1337 - 12 August 1402), m. 1349 to Guido III Novello di Polenta, Lord of Ravenna.
  6. Niccolò II d'Este (17 May 1338 - 26 March 1388).
  7. Azzo d'Este (14 March 1340 - 18 September 1349), died in infancy.
  8. Folco d'Este (1342 - 1356), died young.
  9. Costanza d'Este (25 July 1343 - 13 February 1391), m. 1363 to Malatesta IV Malatesta, Lord of Rimini.
  10. Ugo d'Este (18 October 1344 - 1 August 1370)
  11. Alberto d'Este (1347 - 30 July 1393)
In addition, Obizzo had another illegitimate son by his mistress, Giacomina Pepoli ( –1341)[1]
Child :# Giovanni (1324 - 1389), later Governor of Frignano, who was also legitimized.
