Elisha Estes III was born on 1 Jan 1754 in Lunenburg, Virginia. His parents were Elisha Estes II (1729 - 1791) and Frances (Bottom) Estes (~1734 - ~1808).

Elisha was born about 1750.

Elisha enlisted for one year at Halifax County, Virginia in Company E of Captain Charles Pelham's Company of the 1st Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col. Richard Parker. He served from April 1778 . He was inoculated, probably for smallpox. He was paid 6 2/3 dollar per month. He was discharged at West Point.

Monthly muster rolls chronicle his time in the military:[1]

December 1778-February 1779- Camp Middlebrook, on furlough to March 1
March 1779- Middle Brook, Deserted 1st
July 1779- Camp Rammspough, with Gen. Scott southwd

September 1779- Camp Rammspough, Suppod to be Gl. Scott
November 1779- Camp, Supposed to be with Genl. Scott


He was reportedly married on 25 December 1781 (or 1782 or 1783) to Molly Collins at Bear Grass Creek, Kentucky.[2]

In 1810, Elisha's household in Madison County, Kentucky contained 12 free white individuals:[3]

Elisha began to receive a Revolutionary War pension on 26 June 1818. He was to receive $8 per month.[4]


In 1820, the household of Elisha Ester in Madison County, Kentucky contained 14 free white persons and five enslaved persons. Seven persons were engaged in agriculture and two persons were engaged in manufacturing:[5]

On 20 June 1820 in Fayette, Elisha stated "that he is a farmer by occupation, and that by old age and bodily infirmities, he labours with much difficulty, that he has four children living with him, to wit Nancy 21 years old, Jane 18 years old, Elisha 15 years old and Agatha 15 years old and that his children are chiefly females and consequently not much benefit to him, and his son is yet young.[6]

In 1830, Elisha Estes's household in the Eastern Division of Madison County contained 19 individuals, nine free white persons and 10 enslaved persons:[7]
