Biography

William Etheridge was born about 1535 in Tottenham, England to parents John Ederiche and Anne Margarette Gerrard. He married Sybell Page on 18 May 1564.[1] Children: Agnes, Thomas, Margaret, Abraham, John. He died on 5 Jan 1577 in Tottenham, England.

After he died Sybell married William Wall.

Manorial court records show him as William Elderiche and that he paid homage to the King and Queen and recieved title to land on 3 June 1556. Also from court records. William Elderiche was elected constable for Woodgrene on 30 May 1557; served as jurer of the manorial court at various times between 1558 and 1574. William Elderiche was ordered "to scour his ditch at Woodgrene" on 24 Oct 1560. Court of 4 March 1566 appointed William Elderiche, John Morris, Thomas Martin and others to enquire into various matters affecting the interest of the Lord of the Manor[2]

IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN 1576 and in the nintenth yeare of the reigne of our sov(era)igne .Ladie Elizabeth by the grace of god of England ffraunce and Ireland quen defendor of the faith &c.

I William Etheridge of Woodgrene within the parish of Tottenham yeoman sicke in bodye but of good and perfitt remembrance (thankes be to god) do make this my last will & testament in mannor & from followinge

First I bequeath my soule unto almightie god my heavenlie ffather beinge fullie perswaded of my salvation in the death 􀀍& passion of Jesus Christ willinge & commandinge my bodie to be buried in the parishe churche yard of Tottenham aforesaid neare unto my brother.

Item I geve unto the poore of the parishe of Tottenham XXs.

Item whereas my brother John Etheridge by his last will & testament did geve unto my two daughters & to one of my sonnes viz Margarete Etheridge, Agnes Etheridge and Abraham Etheridge the somm of twentie fyeve poundes six shillinges & eight pence curant englishe money equallie to be devyded emongeste them (which I am indebted to paie) I will that all the corne growing & standinge in & upon my feild called Readinges to be solde to performe & paie the said bequeste & legacie & the ov(er) plus thereof to remayne to my executrix provided alwayes that John Morris & Thomas s Mar!yn shall have the custodie & keepinge of the said XXV vjs viijd until! the said Margarete, Agnes and Abraham shal be maried (a section crossed out) & to put in sufficient bond for the paiment thereof, and if it shall fortune one of them to die then the other two lyvinge to have that parte or portion equallie devided betwixt them.

Item I geve unto mye daughter Margarete Etheridge twelve pounds

Item I geve unto my daughter Agnes Etheridge twelve poundes pro­vided aiso that John Morris & Thomas Martyn shallave the custodie & kepinge of the said money until the daie of their maridge and to put in sufficient bond for paiement thereof & if one of them fortune to die before the said tyrne then the other to be her heire if they bothe fortune to dye before theye be maried then to be equallye devyded emongest my children lyvinge.

Item I geve unto my son Abraham Etheridge one percell of land lyinge at Bowe bushe abuttynge upon hollyborne bridge to him & his heires forever.

Item I geve unto my daughter Margarete Etheridge a pece of gold of thirtye shillinges. Item I geve unto my daughter Agnes Etheridge a pece of gold of thirtye shillinges. Item I geve unto my daughter Agnes Etheridge a silver girdle and a muske ball. Item I geve also to my daughter Agnes Etheridge halfe a dosan of sylver spones with flatt endes.

Item I geve unto my daughter Margarete Etheridge a sylver gilt salte

Item I geve unto my son Thomas Etheridge a sylver gilt spone

Item whereas I am indebted to my brother John Etheridges last will & testament to paie unto my son John Etheridge the somn of fyftye one poundes & ten shillinge s which was his gifte I will that Thomas Wheler of London corier shalhave the custodie & kepinge of the same until he come to the age of XXJ yeares puttinge in good & sufficient suyeties for the payment of the same Provided that if it shall fortune the said John Etheridge 1to die before he come unto the age of xxj yeares then the said Thomas Wheler to paie the said somm of fiftie one poundes ten shillinges to the heirs or heirs of the said John Etheridge within one yeare next after his deathe

Item I geve unto my wifes brother Randolphe Page a cowe.

Item I give to William Morris and William Mason xijd a pece & to the rest of my godchildren ev(er)ie one iiij a piece

The reste of all my goodes unbequeathed (my debtes & legacies paid and funeral! discharged ) I geve unto my wif Sibell Etheridge who I make full and sole executrix of this my last will and testament requesting Thomas Wheler of London corier, John Morris & Thomas Martin be overseers of this my last will & testament that all thinges therein conteyned be performed according to the trewe meanynge thereof, and I geve unto ev(er) ie of them for there paynes iiijs a pece
