William Burton Etherington is born in Birstall near Leeds in 1869: 20 August 1869, Birstall, Yorkshire, the son of James Etherington & Fanny. This is over thirty miles west of Holme on Spalding Moor in rural East Yorkshire where he later marries. He is, however, a grandchild of Burton Etherington born in Wheldrake near Holme in 1809.
In 1896 when Vinnie Horsley was 26, she married William Burton Etherington, also living in Holme on Spalding Moor though born in Birstall: and much the same age as herself herself, at the parish church.
In 1901 William and Vinnie Etherington are together in Stigg Lane, Holme with two children. Gertrude age 3 borne Holme is clearly the child of the couple from their marriage five years earlier. William L Etherington at 14 seems unlikely to be a child of the couple even though he is recorded as son: Suddenly it is clear that his age is supposed to be 14 months, which corresponds to a registration in Howden and his age at census ten years later.
In 1911 William B Etherington had taken his family back to a farm in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in the Crigglestone parish four miles south of Wakefield. He was classed as Employer, but neither the acreage nor the number of employees are recorded.
At the beginning of WW2 William Burton Etherington was 69 but still farming on the outskirts of Ossett in West Yorkshire, With him was his son William Leonard Etherington and his wife Sarah : we have to guess that the other four members of the household are the son's children, two of them unnamed.
William Etherington died in the Spen Valley area south of Leeds, not far from where he was born. He was 72.
