William Etherington was born in Holme on Spaldingmoor but moved to Driffield around 1525, possibly after his marriage to Alice Skerne, daughter and heir of Brian Skerne of Driffield. They had six known children: Thomas (1527-1589), George (1529-1601), William (1531-1600, Randell (c1533-1592), Eleanor (c 1535) and Andrew (c1537-1570). William held considerable land interests in Driffield including several mills. He was also appointed by the lord of the manor, Sir Christopher Danby, ad baliff of the town in 1559. He died, with an Inventory probated at York outlining considerable property in 1562.
