Biography

Rev George Etherington, the eldest son of Thomas Etherington and Anne Stork, was born in 1723. He graduated from Trinity Hall Cambridge with a BCL and LLB and was ordained a priest in 1750. He was vicar of Collingham (1750-72) and of Driffield (1772-1802) as well as one of Driffield's largest landholders. George, who died in 1820, married Jame Umpelby at Collingham on 20/10/1766 and they had seven children:

  1. Ann (b 1767 Collingham),
  2. George (b 1769 Collingham) died young;
  3. Richard (b 1772 Driffield, d 1803 Hull) inherited his father's estate but died without issue;
  4. John (b 1774* Driffield, d. 1820) died without issue;
  5. Henry (b1779* Driffield) died without issue
  6. Jane (b 1775* Driffield, d 1853 Hull) married John La Marche, and eventually inherited her father's estate which developed to George;s only grandchild, her daughter Jane Stork La Marche who married Thomas Holden of Hull; and
  7. Robert (b 23/6/1777 Driffield), died young.
