Henry Etherington was possibly the wealthiest of all of the Etheringtons, and became a noted philanthropist in Hull, donating 2000 pounds towards the establishment of the Hull Infirmary, where his portrait, mounted on a horse, still hangs. He served twice as the Mayor of Hull (1769 and 1785), was Chairman of the Board of Magistrates and was created a Baronet in 1775. He married 1 June 1773 at Stanford-on-Avon, Northamptonshire, Lady Maria Constantia Cave (1745-1811), daughter of Sir Thomas Cave MP (baronet of Stanford Hall Leicestershire)[1]. They had no children, and on his death, his estates descended to his great niece, Lady Mary Beauclerk, the only daughter of the Duke of St Albans, who married the Earl of Coventry.
He built Ferriby House a significant Georgian mansion west of Hull, in the 1780s.
