George Etherington (b 1829 Elvington Yorkshire) joined the 65th Regiment of Foot in 1852 and was sent to New Zealand during the period of mounting tension shortly prior to the New Zealand Wars (possibky via the vessel Calliope.) In 1858 he was stationed in New Plymouth, Taranaki, where he married Sarah Ann Kenyon. (the sister of my gggrandfather John Kenyon.) They had at least one child, a daughter, Sarah, who married Richard Adams. George took his discharge from the British Army in 1862 and his wife Sarah Ann died in 1867. Little more is known. There is a George Etherington from the Taranaki area with a lengthy NZ colonial military history but it seems most likely this was a different person. Any further information would be welcomed.
