Thomas Etherington (aka Elderington aka Etrington) was born in about 1713 and died at Acaster Malbis aged 78 on 9 August 1791, described as a 'farmer and fisher'. He married Elizabeth Lund (1720-1787) at Escrick in 1747. They settled at Cawood where he was a fisherman on the River Ouse. They had four children at Cawood (Thomas 1749, John 1752, George 1755 and Elizabeth 1758) and a fifth child at Acaster Malbis (William 1760). He died in 1791 and was buried at Acaster Malbis, Holy Trinity, Yorkshire.
There are a number of isolated records of Etheringtons in the villages between York and Howden in the 17th and 18th centuries. Of these, the most likely match to Thomas is the Etherington family of Barlby (parish of Hemingbrough) 10km downstream of Cawood on the River Ouse. Three generations of Thomas Etheringtons (aka Elderingtons) were living in the town in c 1717. While the Thomas born to Thomas in 1716 is three years later than the birthdate suggested by Thomas' burial aged 78 in 1791, it would appear to be a very probable match.
Thomas Etherington is said by some online trees to be the son of Thomas Etherington of Great Driffield and his wife Ann Stoke. This is not correct as their son Thomas was baptised in 1732, much too late to marry at Escrick in 1747.
