Dr Raymond Etherington-Smith MA BCh MB FRCS was born in 1877[1] and christened on 3 June at St Mary Putney, Surrey[2]. He was the son of John Smith and Ellen Pears. He passed away at St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1913, after contracting blood poisoning from operating on a patient with gangrene lung[3][4]. He was buried on 23 April at Putney Vale Cemetery, Putney, Surrey[5][6].
Raymond entered Cambridge University (Trinity college) in 1895, obtaining a BA in 1899, MA and BC in 1903, and MB in 1904. He was awarded a rowing ‘blue,’ 1898, 1899 and 1900, and was President of the C.U.B.C. in 1899. He captained the Leander Club from 1903 to 1908. He was captain of the Leander eight which won the gold medal for Great Britain rowing at the 1908 Summer Olympics. He was at St Bartholomew's Hospital from 1903 to 1906, and was House Surgeon and Chief Assistant Surgeon there. From 1906 to 1909, he was Demonstrator in Anatomy and Warden of St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1909. He was one time President of the Abernethy Society[7].
