Biography

1776 Project
James Evans served with 10th Virginia Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

James Evans is the son of Samuel Evans and Ann Colville. His birthdate and death date are from " Southern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements & Rosters." Spouse is Lucy Savage

The Albemarle Barracks, located in Albemarle County near Charlottesville Virginia, and was a prisoner-of-war encampment for British prisoners during the American Revolutionary War.

Following Gen. John Burgoyne's defeat at the Battle of Saratoga, in 1777, several thousand British and German troops, of what came to be known as the Convention Army, were marched to Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Subsequently, the remaining soldiers (some 2,000 British, upwards of 1,900 German, and roughly 300 women and children) marched south in late 1778 - arriving at the Albemarle Barracks encampment in January, 1779.

In modern days, Barracks Road in Charlottesville leads past the Albemarle Barracks encampment.
