U.S. Congressman. He was a teacher, Clerk of Belmont County Ohio, (1827-28), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and commenced to practice law in Hillsboro, Ohio. Moving to Cambridge, Ohio, in 1832, he was Mayor of Cambridge in 1841 and prosecuting attorney of Guernsey County, (1842-46). In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses, serving until 1851. After his term, he was again Mayor of Cambridge, (1855-57), judge of the court of common pleas, (1859-64) and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 75.
