Biography

Bill (Evans) Leahy was born in Victoria, Australia

William "Bill" Richard Leahy, was born (1913)^[1] 1916^[2], 3 years before his mother Serena (nee Evans) married. So it is difficult to tell whether Richard David Leahy was his father or not.

Bill married Mavis (nee Keane), who lived across the road, in 1935^[3]. They had Sylvia later in 1935, and a couple of years later William.

Unfortunately Mavis died in 1946, leaving the children without a mother. To continue working, the children lived with Bill's parents. They all lived in the South Melbourne area.

Bill later remarried to divorcee Lilian^[4], who died only a short time before or after his death too in 2008. He was whisked away to be buried at Fawkner Memorial Park^[5] with Mavis, his first wife.

Research Notes

Although father is as listed on Marriage and Death certificates, it is currently under question, because he was born so much earlier than his parents marriage. DNA is also bringing suggestions of another family at this point.

• Paternal relationship is confirmed by an autosomal AncestryDNA test match between Ben Molesworth and COrr, his 2nd cousin 2x removed. Their most-recent common ancestors are David Leahy and Elizabeth Mackey, the 3rd great grandparents of Ben Molesworth and great grandparents of COrr. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 3rd cousin 1x removed or 4th cousin, based on sharing 11 cM across 1 segments. DNA test taker Ben Molesworth is the great grandson of William Evans, the son of David Leahy, the son of the common ancestors David Leahy & Elizabeth Mackey.

DNA Research

There are DNA matches for this part of the family, but none of the names on others family tree match in with the names that we would expect. I (Ben) am looking at family trees of the matches, and am finding some common surnames repeated. I would expect to find two clusters of DNA matches. Those for the paternal, and those for the maternal side of his real fathers family. The DNA matches are reflecting that, but still require some assistence from those individuals connected, and it is sometimes easier said than done, trying to get co-operation. One side of the family appears to be Kinsman, Berryman, Brokensha, Hawker, Lamley.

• Can't find burial of Lillian. There was some controversy at William's funeral, as he was whisked away to be secretly buried with his first wife. I'm not sure if that was his intention or not. I'm also not sure if that means he died just before Lillian, or just after.
