Margaret Evans was born about 1815 in Windle.
Margaret married John Eccleston on January 5th 1835 at Prescot St Mary's church (Anglican). John was working as a collier, and neither bride nor groom could sign their name; nor could the witnesses, James Eccleston and Jane Birchall. It was a first marriage for both bride and groom.
In 1841, the couple and their first two children, Mary and Isaac, were living with John's mother and siblings in Mount Pleasant, St Helens. A young man named Thomas Evans was living with them, probably a brother of Margaret.
In 1851, they were living in Groves Colliery Row in Sutton, and had two sons, Isaac and Thomas.
In 1861, they were living in Grove Row, Sutton, with two sons, Isaac and Thomas, and a daughter Mary.
John and Margaret were living in Sutton in 1871, with their daughter Mary, and a young couple Thomas and Ann Eccleston were boarding with them. Probably this was their son Thomas.
By 1881, John and Margaret were living in Back Grove Street, Sutton. John was still working as a coal miner at the age of 68! No-one else was in the household.
John died in 1884 in St Helens, aged 70.
