Eyre Evans was born in Ireland.

Eyre Frederick FitzGeorge was born on 23 February 1842 in County Cork, Ireland. He was the first son of George Thomas Evans and Louisa Barbara Corry.

He attended Trinity College, Dublin, but did not sit his final exams for his degree[1]. Instead, he emigrated to New Zealand with his brother Trevor in 1866 on the Queen Bee. According to Eyre's diary, they had the time of their lives, even "helping the sailors with their tasks"[2]. After arrival at Port Chalmers, they went north to buy land near Oamaru.

He married Charlotte Lees on 14 April 1868[3] at a small chapel called Bethel[1], Teaneraki (now Enfield), Otago. They had twelve children, the first few born while living at Awamoka, Otago.

In 1873 he was registered on the Waitaki Electoral Roll as owning freehold land, Part of Section 14, Block 8, Awamoka and living at Waiareka[28] and Awamoko[29]. His father George was living at Cloon Eavins and owned land in Awamoko and Oamaru.

Farming proved difficult for Irish beginners, so the farm was sold in the late 1870s . The family moved into Oamaru where their parents were already living[1]. In 1880 he was registered on the Oamaru Electoral Roll as a settler living in Oamaru[30]. His father and brother Maurice were also living there. Their income was supplemented by the stories that Charlotte published including one novel for which she got £12.

Charlotte died on 22 July 1882 aged 40 years[31], a few days after the birth of her son. Eyre married for the second time to Mary Hey (born Alderson) on 20 December 1888[32] at Oamaru. They had one son.

He arranged for his first wife's poetry to be published in 1917 [35].

Eyre died on 22 August 1919 aged 77 years[36] at Oamaru. He was buried in Oamaru Old Cemetery, Oamaru, Block 103, Plot 7[37] with his first wife Charlotte.
