Narrative

Alfred had a long career in the Postmaster-General's Department in the Public Service of the Commonwealth of Australia. He had several roles that included those associated directly with postal services and telegraph services. This was possible because the Postmaster-General's Department (PMG) was responsible for all these messaging services. Following federation in 1901, the colonial mail systems were merged into the Postmaster-General's Department (PMG). This new department was responsible for telegraph and domestic telephone operations as well as postal mail.[3]

Alfred’s first job appointment in May 1896 (he would have been only 14 years of age) would have been with the state (colonial) mail system. By 1904 his transfer of employment to the new Commonwealth department was confirmed. The different job roles and promotions within the PMG ensured that Alfred moved about the state of South Australia. Before 1905 Alfred was a Telegraph Messenger at Largs Bay, about ten miles north of Adelaide city. From 17th February, 1905 he became Postal Assistant (Grade II) in the Post Office at Port Augusta more than 185 miles (about 300 km) further north but still on the coast. From 11th September, 1910, Alfred moved about 65 miles (around a hundred kilometers) down the state to the town of Laura and into a more senior Postal Assistant (Grade IV) role with an increased salary. From 20th March, 1912, Alfred became a Telegraphist (5th Class) in the Telegraph Branch. This role was of the same salary as that he had undertaken immediately prior, and this can only suggest that the move was for the convenience of a location change. On the 11th March 1926, Alfred obtained his re-location to Glenelg with a promotion as a Clerical Assistant (Class 4). [4] Glenelg remained a place of interest for the family, with Alfred and family returning to live at an address there after his retirement. At the beginning of 1933 Alfred moved again from Glenelg east 25 miles (40 Kilometers) to Mount Barker for a promotion to Postmaster of the office.

On Friday 3rd January, 1947, Alfred officially retired from the Postmaster-General's Department, almost fifty-one years after he commenced service. [5]
