William Tucker Evans was born about 1812 in Bermuda. He was the second youngest son of Admiral Andrew Fitzherbert Evans (1766-1826) and Jehoaddan 'Hody' Tucker (-1833). The family returned to England when William was about five years of age, but soon after moved to Jersey. [1]
He entered the Naval College at Portsmouth and later served in some Royal Navy ships, but left the sea and migrated to New South Wales (Australia) in October 1834 on the Undaunted to take up an offer of work from his first cousin Sir Francis Forbes, Chief Justice of New South Wales. He managed his cousin's properties in the Hunter Valley. [1]
In 1839 in the Presbyterian Church, Whittingham, New South Wales, William married Janet Pagan [2] and they had at least five children, before Janet died in 1858: [3]
About 1855, he settled his family in Orange and was appointed Clerk of Petty Sessions, a position he held for some thirty years. [1]
William married a second time, to Julia Mackey in 1861 in Orange. [4] They had a further five children:
