At this point in the lineage, we are reverting back to the last name of the person being the first name of the father, as was custom in parts of Wales and the Nordic countries. This is known as patronymic (occasionally matronymic). Mary's father's first name was John, so her last name would have been Johns or interpreted here in America, Jones. John's father's first name was Evan, so John is known as John Evans (as in Evan's son). Another example is Anderson. Ander's had a son named Johan. Johan is known as Johan Andersson or in America, John Anderson. In the case of a daughter, named Isobel, often the naming would be Isobel Andersdotter. Post at Ancestry: I,too,am a 5th great-granddaugster of col. John and Rebecca Ann Martin Evans. I was lucky enough to go to Wales several years ago and visited the village David, Col. John's Grandfather, came from. The only thing I found in the genealogy center of a town nearby was that David was thrice married and nothing else on his past. I don't know if the thrice included Mary Jones who he married in Philadelphia Cty. or not and neither did the librarian. I have quite a bit on Col.John and his ancestors. If you want to send me a hard copy of what you have, I'll try to fill in any blanks that I can. My smail is: HC 70 Box 540, Davis, WV 26260. I also belong to the DAR in Morgantown where there is a chapter named after Col. John. I live about two hours from Morgantown and a lot of research was done on him and his descendents in the l930's by a Thomas Dilly who turn all of his papers over to the University in Morgantown. I was lucky enough to go through what remains of then. Much was taken like photos, etc. I go through his son Dudley>Nimrod>James>George M.>Clarence>George M.>me. James moved to Pleasants Ridge in Tyler Co., WV. Betty Riley [3]

I a trying to get more information about the ancestry of Col John Evans. Two possible people briley@access.mountain.net and wedigs@strato.net. The information I have is Col John Evans 1737-1834 son of John Evans 1705-1747 and Margaret, son of David Evans, son of Evan William Powel who died on ship on way to USA [4]

Born in Slanvareth, North, Wales on 1644 to John William and Gwen. David married Margaret John and had a child. David married Mary Jones and had 7 children. He passed away on 1710 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with David by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with David:

Is Mary Evans another daughter? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Evans-23619

I've linked Mary into the family. Her profile is orphaned. If someone knows otherwise she can be detached..
