Evan "Bud" Evans was born in Richmond, Indiana and spent his early years growing up in South Chicago. He was an amateur boxer, and he said, "It was safer in the gym then out on the mean streets in those days." When he was 16 he ran away to join the circus (yes, a true story). When he got to the circus, the owner recognized him as the son of Lee Barton Evans, who at the time was a well known entertainer and celebrity appearing in operas and musical comedies. Grandfather told him to give Evan the worst job they had, so he spent two weeks cleaning up the elephant areas. He learned his lesson and went back home to Chicago, where he was a lighting technician at Granddad's stage shows. At that time his roommate was a young unknown wannabee singer named Mike Douglas (the talk show host), who was singing for free just to get his start. At 19 Evan enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1939. He spent a total of 13 years as both a regular enlisted and in the reserves. He was stationed in Miami, Florida, Cuba, and the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theater in WWII, and then called up from the reserves to fight in the Korean War. He was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon (CAR) with one Gold Star by the Department of the Navy for his combat service. He worked for the New York Central Railroad in New York City, and was an active union member. He always loved trains and had a model railroad train set that he was proud of. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

"The 90mm antiaircraft guns also were ready that same day, fortunately so, since the Japanese launched the first of 159 air raids carried out during the campaign. The battalion's antiaircraft weapons downed 46 aircraft, including 13 of 16 in one formation. Edmund D. Hadley, serving with the antiaircraft group, helped fight off one of the heaviest raids. "I will always think of July 4, 1943, as the day the planes fell," he said, his memory sharpened by the fact that he and his 90mm gun crew had to dive into a mud hole to escape a Zero fighter strafing Rendova."

In late 1951 Dad was recalled from the US Marine Corps Reserves (called retreads at the time) to be assigned to the Korean War. He went to training first at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where we joined him. My Mother, Brother and I lived across the street during this time. I remember, Dad took me to the Camp one evening, and retreat began to play on the loud speaker system. Dad stopped, immediately came to attention, stood straight as an arrow, gave a snappy salute directly facing the Colors. I could see the pride and honor in his baby-blue eyes, and that day I learned a life lesson in American pride, honor and love of GOD and country. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
