Title: Evans/Gibson and Lightfoot family
I have changed the approximate date of birth for this MORRIS EVANS, from 1675, to 1665, based on info from the EVANS Petitions from the Virginia Chancery Records, which give an approximate age for JANE GIBSON the Elder, and her daughter of the same name. Since MORRIS' wife, JANE GIBSON, is now estimated to have been born about 1660, I now believe that he wouldn't have been so much younger than her, and therefore I am now estimating his age as born about 1665. All previous notes included below showing the 1675 date are being left there to show the progression of my research, but please understand that the date of 1665 is now what I am using. (DW 11/11/2013)
It is now apparent that this MORRIS EVANS, b. ca 1665, was married to JANE GIBSON, b. ca 1660-70, as related in the EVANS Family Chancery Records. Also according to those records, MORRIS EVANS & JANE GIBSON were the progenitors of several other family lines including those of the surnames of SCOTT, BRADBY, SMITH, REDCROSS, MORRIS & BOWMAN (see the file of JANE GIBSON, b. 1660-70, for further details) 6/8/2013

Sept. 19, 2011-DW For years, it was thought that MORRIS EVANS may have been of Welsh descent, but a few days ago I was contacted by a direct descendant who had DNA tests done and it was proved that the family was of African descent. Following is the portion of the message discussing the results: "Sent: Saturday, September 17, 2011 12:33 PM Subject: Regarding the Ancestral Origins of Morris Evans (b. 1675) My name is G. Evans. I am a direct descendant of Morris Evans as follows: Morris (b.1675) Charles (b. 1696) Richard (b. 1740) Richard (b. 1776) Fielding (b. 1812) George (b. 1853) Charles Robert (b. 1889) George Maze (b. 1915) Preston (b. 1933) I am the 7x great grandson of Morris (b. 1675) and his direct patrilineal descendant. As a result, I carry a near identical y-chromosome package. I recently had a Y-Chromosome DNA test done. The results of that test were unambiguous. I am positive for a SNP marker that indicates that my patrilineal line originates in West Africa and specifies my haplogroup as E1B1a. Heavy concentrations of this haplogroup are found among the Mandenka and Yoruba. I also had a mitochondrial DNA test done that indicated an admixture that is 73% African (Mandenka/Yuroba) and 27% European (Orkney Islands/Scots, Eastern European). This mixture obviously represents genetic contributions from both of my parents. These results indicate that Morris (b. 1675) was of African descent on his father's side. His father could have not been English/Welsh... ...I am also willing to share the test results with you as documentation. The testing was done by Family Tree DNA, the premier firm in this field." 2 3 Change Date: 11 Apr 2016 at 15:52:08

The dna compared between James and Thomas are both Wales in origin, but they do NOT match closely. Even though the descendants of Thomas, above listed, did marry into the REDCROSS and other mixed race and Native families, the dna does not match Morris, listed above. All three were in Colonial Virginia. James and Thomas had families in Amherst Co VA at the same time, though not related closely, as proven by dna.
Daughter Elizabeth Evans b. 1700/1710 married Richard Bradby b. 1700/1710, => the Bradby family of the Chickahominy and Pamunkey tribes.

The Chickahominy and Pamunkey Bradby Descendants of Jane Gibson the Elder
Key words: Berkeley Plantatiion, Bradby, Charles City County, Chickahominy, Evans, Gibson, Pamunkey, Shirley Plantation, Weyanoke
Jane Gibson was invited onto the plantation by John Carter where she practiced doctoring. For a detailed discussion of Jane Gibson who is the maternal progenitor of the Evans family of Granville County, please read this blogpost.
All of what is documented about Jane Gibson the Elder’s life comes from the testimony of her descendants and people who knew her. Though she was a free woman whose free status should have been passed down to all her descendants, a branch of her offspring were illegally held in slavery for several generations. Beginning in the late 1700s and through the early 1800s, these descendants filed freedom suits claiming descent from a free Indian woman, Jane Gibson the Elder. The sworn deposition and in court testimony from a white man named Robert Wills, provided the most in depth discussion about her life and the identity of her descendants. The following is a bullet point summary of relevant information from Robert Wills sworn deposition and in court testimony from 1791 on two separate dates, June 5th and July 9th:
