Biography

Raymond Evatt MC was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Raymond was born in 1896. He is the son of Ashmore Evatt and Jeannie Gray.

Sargeant Raymond Scott Evatt enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 15 March 1915. His Next of Kin was listed as his mother, Mrs J Evatt of Grantham Street, Milson's Point, North Sydney, New South Wales. Raymond stated he had served as Sergeant in the Cadets in the North Sydney area before the war. He was assigned to the 20th Battalion, A Company and this unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A35 Berrima on 25 June 1915. He would go on to serve as a Lieutenant with the 20th Battalion and gained promotion to 2nd Lieutenant on the 16th of August 1916. He would see active service in Egypt, Gallipoli and finally on the Western Front. Lieutenant Raymond Scott Evatt was recommended for the Military Cross:

For conspicuous gallantry in action North of Warlencourt in command of the first wave in the attack on Le Barque Trench.
With recommendation dates of 7 and 14 March 1917.
Raymond Evatt MC is an Anzac who served in World War One.
Lieutenant Raymond Scott Evatt was unfortunately Killed in Action on or about the 20th of September 1917 at Westhoek Ridge near Ypres, Belgium. This was part of the Battle of Passchendaele and he was only 21 years old at the time of his death. He has no known resting place, but is Commemorated on The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium) Memorial, Belgium.

Along with his Military Cross, Lieutenant Raymond Scott Evatt was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
