Reenlisted as Veteran, Jan 1, 1864 Soldiers who had served out their enlistments could reenlist as Veteran Volunteers. General Hancock commanded the corps. It allowed veterans who were no longer fit to serve in the field, but wanted to contribute to the war effort a way to reenlist. They could do guard duty, office work, etc. It was originally called the Veteran Invalid Corps. Men who returned to active duty in the V. V. were said to have veteranized.[7]
