Biography

Note: Doris Alberta Evers graduated from high school in June 1931. She attended. Monmouth College in Monmouth,IL and Cornell College in Mount Vernon,IA one year. each. She then worked with her father in the bank at Stanwood for a while. Doris was an accomplished seamstress and during this time she did special. Millinary work for Killians, the large department store in Cedar Rapids. 2 During 1936-1937 she was in Ann Arbor, MI working in the Dietetics Department. of a large dormintory of the University of Michigan. 2 Doris married Howard C. Werner December 25, 1937. They lived for a time in. Cedar Rapids, IA and in Aurora, IL. She moved to San Diego, CA in Oct.1946 and. went to work in a large department store for the Walter Scott Co. She was. divorced from Howard Werner in 1948. She married Burney E. Dusch Nov. 17, 1951. Burney was Navy connected and San Diego was his home base. They acquired a home. on Point Loma overlooking the ocean where she still resides. Burny died of. heart attack November 25, 1960. Doris worked for the Walter Scott Co. for 29 years -the last 16 years being the. Buyer, and Manager of all the Walter Scott Millinery Departments (later this. included wigs) of which there were 10 in all. Her work with hats started when. she was a little girl, altering old "play" hats she found in the attic at. 2 home. She referred to raspberries as "Sunbonnets". The family usually called on. her to do any necessary clothing alterations. Those close enough still do. 2 Doris retired from Walter Scott Jan. 1st, 1976.She then went to work for a. smaller retail store, Lownes, near her home,doing selling and office work. Finally retiring from there in 1987. 2 As noted above she is still living in her home on Point Loma, overlooking the. ocean. She has many hobbies, all kinds of needle work, making colored leaded. glass decorations, and she is a past-master at working cross word puzzles. For. years she would complete one during breakfast before going to work!.
