Jemima Borland Ewart was born 10 September 1810. She is the daughter of John Ewart and Margaret Borland.[1]

Marriage
Jemima married Morden Carthew, son of Rev. Morden Carthew and Elizabeth Tweed Pyke, in Bombay, India on 16 July 1827.[2][3][4]

They had 10 children;

  1. Margaret Carthew, born 17 September 1828, married 11 January 1848, Hugh Rigg, and died 15 December 1901;
  2. Emily Jane Carthew, born 6 November 1830, married 19 September 1867;
  3. Morden Carthew, born 21 June 1832;
  4. John Ewart Carthew, born 17 November 1834, died young in October 1835;
  5. Catherine Alicia Carthew, born 27 September 1836, died young 1 June 1837;
  6. Frederick Chalmers Carthew, born 28 March 1840, died young 7 August 1840;
  7. Charles Alfred Carthew, born 3 September 1841;
  8. Jemima Fanny Carthew, born 24 December 1842, married 8 May 1862;
  9. Mary, born 3 July 1844, died 7 December 1901;
  10. Ewart Carthew, born 24 January 1847.

The census of 1861 has Jemima living in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.[5]

The British Library has in it's archives a hand written recipe book entitled "Mrs Carthew's Recipe Book" which is believed to have been compiled by Jemima.[6]

Jemima died 19 April 1863 and was buried on 22 April 1863 at All Souls, Kensal Green, Kensington, London. [7]. Her widower married secondly Mary Clarke on 9 August 1866, and died 4 September 1888 at Norfolk.[8]
