Biography

Dora B. Ewbank was born Mar. 1863 in Kansas, according to census records from 1900. Her father, George Ewbank, was about 30 years old when Dora was born. Her mother was Lucinda Smith.

George Ewbanks served in the U. S. Army during the Civil War. His company muster-out roll for 31 Aug, 1865 is labeled "Ft. Leavenworth, Ks.". Corp. George Ewbank, Co. B, 11 Reg't Kansas Cavalry was last paid to 31 Dec, 1864. "Bounty paid $25; due $75." "Remarks: Appt'd Corpl Sept/64. Stop for Revolver & accts. $8.00; for sabre belt plate ret'd $1.35"

George Ewbank married Lucinda Smith on Aug. 4, 1861 in Jefferson County, Kansas; this was about a year before he joined the army. Dora B. Ewbank, their daughter, was born in about 1863; that was during the time the George was serving in the cavalry.

Lucinda Smith died in 1866, leaving Dora a motherless three year old.

George Ewbank married Mrs. Lucy Barnes 10 March 1870 at South Cedar, Jackson Co., Kansas. The marriage licence issued 7 March 1870 lists George Ewbank as 37 years old and Lucy F. Barnes as 36 years old.

George Ewbank died 16 Jan 1879 according to Lucy's pension papers. A deposition sworn by M. B. Fowler and D. B. Phillips at "Dalles City", Wasco Co., Oregon on 16 February 1891 states, "that George Ewbanks the husband of Lucy F. Ewbanks died on Jan 16 1879! that we were present in his house at the time of his death and also at the funeral". Maud Barnes had five Fowler children living with her in 1900 so I would guess that she is the M. B. Fowler of 1891. Dora B. was the wife of Matthew Phillips in 1900, living with his daughters, Maud E. and Hazel J. Philips in Klikitat Co., Washington State; I would presume that she is the D. B. Phillips of 1891.

Family tradition reports that Lucy and her family moved to The Dalles, Oregon in 1888. They may have ridden the emigrant train to San Francisco, a boat to Portland and a train to The Dalles or even to Walla Walla, Washington as did the family of Jennie Mattie May Fitzsimmons in May of 1882. Dora may or may not have traveled to Oregon with Lucy's family party.

An act of the U. S. Congress on 27 June 1890 made Lucy eligible for a pension since she was the needy widow of a Civil War veteran, George Ewbank. Lucy filed her "Declaration for Widow's Pension" on 29 July 1890, was granted the pension in October of 1891 (with a fee of $10) and finally got $8 per month for herself and $2 per month for Lola.

Lucy may have been staying with Dora when she made the following deposition in the "State of Washington, County of Klickitat. Lucy F. Ewebanks P. O. The Dalls, Oregon, personally appeared before me, whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit and who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, do depose and say that she is claimant herein, that she is the widow of George Ewebanks, that her husband was a member of Co. B. 11th Kans. Cav., that he was discharged Aug. 13, 1865 and was not in the military or naval service of the U.S. subsequent to Aug. 13, 1865, and was in no other organization of the army or navy than Co. B 11th Kans. Cav. and further say that my knowledge of the above facts is obtained from the following source, viz: a personal and intimate with him all the time from August 1861 to his death"..."Lucy F. Ewbank Sworn to and subscribed before me this 10 day of September A. D. 1891"..."W.R. Dunbar, Notary Public for State of Washington residing at Goldendale Washington"

Lucy Finicum Barnes Ewbank died 25 Oct 1894 at the age of 61. This date is recorded in her pension papers; no location is given.

The name of Daisy Dean is given in a Ewbank genealogy as a daughter of Dora Ewbank. An obituary of Clara Dean Berry also includes the "Dean" name. This was sent to me by Barbee Hodgkins of The Dalles, Oregon; she received it from Anne M. Ward of Husum, WA who collected it from the White Salmon (Wash.) "Enterprise". The accompanying note says, "18 may 1951 p5 col 5..ent 95". "OBITUARY - CLARA DEAN BERRY Clara Dean Berry, born October 19, 1882, in Oscaloosa, Kansas. Parents were Mathew Jackson Phillips and Dora Belle Eubanks Phillips. They were homesteaders in Klickitat County and she attended school at White Pine. She married Lee Shurtz in October 1897 in Goldendale, Wash. To them three children were born, two of which have preceeded her in death leaving one son, Raymond C. Shurtz of Klickitat. Mr. Lee Shurtz passed away in February 1917. She married John Berry in November 1917. To them a daughter was born, who also preceeded her mother in death. She was a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge of Klickitat. At the time of her death she was attending and taking an active part in the convention in Longview, Washington. She became ill and was taken to St. Johns hospital in Longview May 3, 1951, where she passed away. Mrs. Berry was a member of the Methodist Church of Appleton, Washington. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, John Berry; a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Shurtz of Klickitat; two sisters, Mrs. F. E. Oneal of Vancouver, Wash; and Mrs. A. Broome, Sacramento, Calif; three granddaughters- Mrs. Jack Meads of Klickitat, Mrs. John R. Roberts of San Francisco, Cali; and Mrs. Al Henry of White Salmon; four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted May 7, 1951, at 2pm. from Phillips Funeral Home in Goldendale. Interment was in the Appleton cemetery." It would appear that Clara Dean Phillips is the "Daisy Dean" listed in the genealogy as Dora Ewbank's daughter.

Dora B. was the wife of Matthew Phillips in 1900, living with his daughters, Maud E. and Hazel J. Philips in Klikitat Co., Washington State. The census record is for Washington St., Klickitat Co., Pine Forest Precinct, 7 & 8 June, 1900, dwelling 50, family 50. Philips, Matthew was Head of household, White, Male, Born Sept. 1859, Age ?48?, Married 20, Born Missourie, Father born North Carolina, Mother born Tennessee, Farmer. _______, Dora B. was Wife of head, White, Female, Born Mar. 1863, Age 37, Married 20, 3 children, 3 living, Born Kansas, Father born Indiana, Mother born Unknown. _______, Maud E. was Daughter of head, White, Female, Born Apr. 1890, Age 10, Single, Born Washington, Father born Missouria, Mother born Kansas. _______, Hazel J. was Daughter of head, White, Female, Born Jan. 1900, Age 4/12, Single, Born Washington, Father born Missouria, Mother born Kansas. I would guess that Maud E. Phillips was named after Dora's step-sister, Maud Barnes.

Ernest C. Smith married Dora Ewbank Phillips on 4 Aug 1920. Dora was daughter of George Ewbank and Lucinda Smith. She was born in Kansas.[1]

In 1930 Dora was age 66.[2]

The following materials from "Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Appleton, Wash. Klick. Co. (collected 30 May 1994) A.M.W." include some of Dora's family. This material was sent to me by Barbee Hodgkins of The Dalles, Oregon. Stone one lists "Dora Bell Smith, 1863-1935, Mother". An adjacent stone lists "M.J. Phillips, Sept 15 1859, Nov 14 1915". The stone below that lists two names under "Berry", "Clara Dean 1882-1951" and "John Q 1877-". The stone beside this one says "Lola Berry, May 11 1918, Sept 5 1924". It appears that Dora is buried beside her husband, Mathew Jackson Phillips, and with her oldest daughter, Clara, and her granddaughter, Lola Berry.
