Biography

In June 1877 he became a Licenced Surveyor with the New South Wales Department of Lands.

In 1885 he was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly.

In 1901 he moved into Federal politics winning the Richmond electorate in the House of Representatives.

He was Minister for Home Affairs 1906-07, then Defence 1907-08 in the Deakin Federal government.

In 1908 he was knighted.

He retired from politics in 1910 due to poor health.

He had three sons and two daughters.

He died in a Private Hospital in Darlinghurst.

He is buried in Wollongong Cemetery, Wollongong, Wollongong City, New South Wales, Australia.

He left an estate valued at 54,975 pounds.
