Biography

John was born in Dysart in 1826, the second child of James Ewan and Margaret Todd. After working as a handloom weaver in his youth, he trained as a sailor in the Merchant Service and spent some time at sea, though he also worked for a while as a grocer back in his home town. He married Helen Duff in 1850 and they had nine children together. Later on he worked as a pilot out of Dysart harbour before retiring to Edinburgh. Five years after his wife died, John passed away in 1909, aged 83.
