Extract from Ewing in Early America Chapter XXXXII (42) "A Word, or Two about those Early Ewings Who are Left Out" , page 396

"EWING of Monroe Co., VA James Ewing [Grand Father to this James Ewing-3979] died there and named sons and daughters. Sons died and named brothers and sisters. Anne Kimball and I have spent much time and money and energy exploring all the EWING information there, to no avail. This is one of the most baffling groups of EWING thus far. James was there fairly early and his progeny were widespread. We have seen no biography, family information to identify whence they came."

The Fife book documenting the Ewings in Early America is considered by many Ewing researchers as the "bible" of Ewing genealogy and is one of the 5 or 6 major comprehensive works wrt to early Ewings. But, her book is also recognized by most, if not all, as having a few significant errors in conclusions that have been proved by DNA, especially Y DNA, including in her own branch.

And for the same reason Margaret Fife had trouble documenting this branch is why today most of the inconsistencies/errors/undocumented conclusions of Ewing genealogy are found within this branch; of which I am a proud member.DG Ewing Sr

After 6 decades of Ewing research, especially my own line, this is the first encounter of James of Monroe , my 3rd GGF, having two wives. I do know of a James Ewing (son of Alexander 1733-1789 and Racheal-Margaret Ewing-Ewing) who m a Mary Thompson.

But that James is a different line , based on Y DNA.

However, I have a confirmed (DNA) cousin who believes that James also m a Sarah Massey(ie)....

We know that there are two 1850 census from the 6th and 7th districts of Monroe Co who have a James (83/84) living with possible daughters. One for sure is living with Margaret McSpadden his daughter and he is also the James who m Mary Thompson.

Some believe that the two 1850 Monroe Co James are the same person, and were living with or visiting his daughters on the days that the census were taken.

Please share your research that indicates that James who married Elizabeth Massey in 1797 , also married Mary Thompson.

I do have many DNA matches with Thompson descendants that appear to connect with my Ewing line and we have yet to connect the dots...

again Thank you and please stay connected>

BTW, I am the admin of the Ewing Family Association's Ewing Y DNA Project.

Where did you find that we are connected? DNA, or a tree at WikiTree

James died in 1856 in Madisonville, Monroe, Tennessee and had 2 wives. James was born 1766 in Prince Edward Co., Virginia. The other wife is Mary Thompson born 1771 in North Carolina and she died 1835 in Blount County, Tennessee. I believe this is where we connect as 3-5th cousins on my Thompson line thru this marriage.
