Mary was born in 1853 in Aberdeen, Scotland.[1][2]
When Mary was about 25 she married on 17 September 1878 in Shanghai, China. Note: Robert Law left Aberdeen and went to Glasgow to work in 1875. He got a job with a shipping company where he met a Captain of a ship which sailed to China. He was persuaded to go out as the Captain told him young men are needed out there. He left Glasgow for Shanghai in 1876. Having known Mary Lizzie Ewing in Aberdeen where the families Law and Ewing attended the same church in Old Aberdeen – he asked her to go out with him. She left in 1878 and they were married in Shanghai 17 Sept 1878, as follows: "Robert Law (of full age, bachelor, bookkeeper, living Shanghai, s/o Robert Law) married Mary Lissie Ewing (of full age, spinster, no profession, living Shanghai, d/o James Ewing) in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Church of England, by Charles Henry Ritchie DD, witnesses were Geo S MacBan, W H Poate and A Twiggs.".[3][4]
