extract: "After leaving school Cyril worked for a time on ‘Donkel’ and then went to ‘Warrington’ on a share-farm basis with his brother Tom. In 1941 he joined the Navy and spent time on the old assault ship “Kanimbla”. The “Kanimbla” was particularly involved in most of the landings in the Pacific Islands, and Cyril used to tell some hair-raising stories of his experiences as a barge-driver, when he was engaged in ferrying the troops from the ships to the shore.
After the War years, Cyril married Sylvia Estelle Kirby and they had three children –Merilyn Estelle (1947), Heather Caroline (1948) and Russel Cyril (1958).
On leaving the Navy, Cyril worked for a time on a property near ‘Woodlands’ belonging to Bill Jones who had gone to school with Ted. Cyril was working there as a well-borer, looking for water. After a few years he was allocated a Soldier Settlement block at Wandoan, and as Ted recalls, his brother must have a bit of his Pioneer Grandfathers in him, because the block was heavily timbered with thick Brigalow scrub, which he had to clear before he could start his farm. It was, however, good rich country with good deep soil.
Cyril passed away in 1977, and his widow and son, are now working the property, which is known as ‘Hidden Vale’.”
