OBITUARY. DEATH OF DR. FAIRBAIRN. The sad news of the death of Dr. James Fairbairn, owner of Burnside estate, in the Leigh Road district, which occurred on Sunday evening, will be received with general regret throughout the Geelong district. About a week since the deceased gentleman was seized with a severe cold of the influenza. type, but he was not prostrated until Friday and Saturday last, when he was compelled to remain at home, and on Sunday, when the symptoms became alarming in their character and medical assistance in Geelong was sought after. Dr. Small proceeded to the late Dr. Fairbairn's residence, and prescribing for the patient returned to Geelong, but about four hours afterwards Dr. Fairbairn died. The deceased gentleman who is only 34 years of age, was the son of Dr. George Fairbairn, of Lara. He was educated at the Geelong Grammar School, and left that institution in 1870, completing his education at the Edinburgh University where he took his degree as a doctor, and returning to Victoria he became manager of the Elcho estate at Lara, and for a brief period occupied a position in the Corio shire council. After a short sojourn in the Gippsland district as a grazier he returned to the Geelong district, and became proprietor of the Burnside Estate, where in the prime of life he has succumbed suddenly to an attack of influenza despite his robust constitution. The late Dr. Fairbairn was universally liked and esteemed, and in the district where he has lately resided his loss will be keenly felt. The deceased gentleman leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss.
