(Aug 1934). ROYAL GUEST AT MAWALLOCK. Mr. and Mrs. Russell to Entertain Duke. Australians In general and Victorians In particular will be interested to learn that Mr. and Mrs. Alec Russell are to entertain the Duke of Gloucester at Mawallock, Beaufort, which Is one of the most attractive homesteads in the Western district. Tall and slim, Mrs. Russell is a distinguished figure at most of the Important race meetings, and she and her husband will make a gracious host and hostess. Mawallock, which was built by Mr. Russell's grandfather, and which was occupied until recently by his father (Mr. Phillp Russell), is a fit setting for their hospitality. Surrounded by a garden filled with English flowers, and with the green and gold of English trees breaking the sombreness of the pines which encircle It, Mawallock combines the restful charm of an English country home with the variety of an Australian station. Since the property was first settled in 1837, and since the first homestead was built by the late Mr. Alexander Russell in 1842, the Russell family have planted English trees so that their roses and delphiniums grow beneath sheltering oaks and elms, while silver birches and larches lend undertones of grey and silver to the garden's brilliance. At the bottom of the garden Is a lake, large enough for dinghy races and ideal for bathing. Until the Duke's wishes are known no plans can be made for his entertainment, nor can any house party be arranged. This will be the first time that a member of the Royal family has been entertained at Mawallock, but It will be remembered that Mrs. Russell's mother (Mrs. Fred Fairbairn) gave a ball In honour of the Prince of Wales during his visit to Victoria in 1920. Mrs. G. A. Fairbairn (Mrs. Russell's sister-in-law) is a sister of the Marchioness of Cambridge, who is a niece by marriage of the Queen. Mr. and Mrs. Russell's only son (Philip) and their elder daughter (Virginia) are botli at school, but the baby, Robina, is at Mawallock.
(Feb 1938). PERSONAL. WELL-KNOWN passengers who will leave Melbourne on the Orion on March 1 include Mr. and Mrs. Alex Russell and their family, of Mawallok, Beaufort;
