[There is a problem with the d.o.b. of John Philip. His gravestone gives his date of birth as 5 Mar 1834. But William and Alison were married in 1840. So, either John's d.o.b. is wrong, or William was married to someone else before Alison.]

With his uncle, he drowned in a boating accident on the Gamtoos River.

Some sources report that the child drowned with William Enowy Philip was his niece, others maintain that it was his grandson. According to Heese & Lombard, it was his son John Fairbairn Philip. In fact it was his nephew, John Philip Fairbairn.

South African Commercial Advertiser 1845 - 3 - July to September
Saturday 12 July 1845
DIED at Hankey, District of Uitenhage, on Tuesday the 1st July, the Rev. William PHILIP, eldest son of the Rev Dr. PHILIP, and Resident Missionary at Hankey, aged thirty-one years; and Master John Philip FAIRBAIRN, eldest son of John FAIRBAIRN Esq, Cape Town, aged eleven years.
So the confusion arises from the recording of John Philip Fairbairn wrongly as John Fairbairn Philip
