John was born about 1620 in Morayshire, Scotland. He possibly married in Alves, where his children were christened. The Alves parish registers for baptisms and Marriages commenced later, in 1648. They contain the christenings of John’s children: John, Anna, Alexander, Margaret, Issobell and Jean.
The early baptisms state only the father’s name. The mother’s name was not recorded.
