Biography

Elspet was born in about 1828, based on her listings in the various Scotland Censuses. No birth or baptismal record has yet been uncovered. She was born at the farmstead of Upper Aucheoch in the parish of New Deer, Aberdeenshire. She was the daughter of John Falconer and Elizabeth Anderson.

Elspet married Alexander Rettie at New Deer on 31 May 1859, and they went on to have five known children together.

1851 Scotland Census^[2]: Elspet lived at Upper Aucheoch, New Deer, Aberdeenshire, with her parents, her brother, two labourers, and a visitor.
1861 Scotland Census^[3]: Elspet lived at Upper Ironside, New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire, with her husband and infant daughter, her widowed mother, and two servants.
