Ernest Newstead Falkner was born in 1879 at Woodham Walter, Essex.. He is the third son and fifth child of Robert Falkner and Henrietta Wells who married in 1873 at Wallingford, Berkshire. His birth was registered at Maldon, Essex, in the fourth quarter of 1879.
At the 1881 census, Ernest (misspelt Earnest) and the family are living at The Rectory at Woodham Walter, Essex. Details listed - father Robert H Falkner (51, rector of Woodham Walter, born Ireland), mother Henrietta Falkner (34 (age error), born Wallingford, Berkshire), brother Arthur N Falkner (7, born Ireland), brother Harold N Falkner (5, born Woodham Walter), sister Ethel N Falkner (4, born Woodham Walter), sister Kathleen N Falkner (3, born Woodham Walter), and Earnest N Falkner (1, born Woodham Walter). Also listed are a governess (French?), and four servants.
Between the 1881 census and 1884 a further four siblings were born. Twins Claude N Falkner and Herbert N Falkner, born in 1881, died soon after birth. A brother, born in 1882, was also called Claude N Falkner, while a sister Ianthe N Falkner, was born in 1884.
In the 1891 census Earnest (sic) Falkner (11, born Woodham Walter, Essex), and his mother Henrietta Falkner (46, married, born Wallingford), are found at his mother's parental home at High Street, Wallingford, Berkshire. His grandparents, Edward Wells (70, High Steward, banker and brewer) and Isabella Wells (73), and a cousin Edgar Dell (13), are present, along with six resident servants.
At the same 1891 census Ernest's father is recorded at the home of his brother and his family, near Bath, Somerset, his two eldest brothers Arthur (17) and Harold (15) are at boarding school, sisters Ethel (14) and Kathleen (12) are with a family in Surrey, while the two youngest children, Claude and Ianthe, are at the family home, the rectory in Woodham Walter, Essex, being looked after by the servants.
Ernest's mother died in 1896, aged 50. Ernest was about 16.
Ernest has not been traced in the 1901 census.
In 1907 Ernest's father died, at Woodham Walter.
At the 1911 census Ernest Falkner (31, single, born Woodham Walter) is on his own and head of household at "Guys", Woodham Walter, Essex. His is noted as a gentleman farmer with two resident servants - cook and housemaid. Guys" was a farm, now a Grade II listed building.[1]
In Post Office, and Kelly's, Directories for Essex for 1912, Ernest Newstead Falkner is listed as a resident in the parish of Latchingdon and Snoreham, about 10 miles from Woodham Walter.
In the 1939 England and Wales register Ernest Faulkner (sic) (date of birth 16 September 1879, single) is listed as a patient at Holloway Sanatorium, Private Mental Hospital, by Egham, Surrey. His occupation is farmer - retired, incapacitated.
Ernest Newstead Falkner of "The Coffee Tavern", Grays, Essex, died 22 December 1950 at Holloway Sanatorium, Virginia Water, Surrey. Administration ....... to Kathleen Newstead McComas, widow, and Newstead Perronet Falkner, poultry dealer. (National Prodate Calendar - 1951). His death was registered at Surrey in the fourth quarter of 1950, aged 71.
Ernest Newstead Falkner was buried at Christ Church, Virginia Water, Surrey, on 3 January 1951. His last abode is recorded as Holloway Sanatorium, Virginia Water.
