MRS. GERTRUDE COWAN
There passed away at Valmar Private Hospital, Tumut, after a short but severe illness, Mrs. Gertrude Annie Cowan. Her demise was not unexpected locally, for it was realised a week or so ago that her case was hopeless, and so nearly everyone was prepared for the worst.
The late Mrs. Cowan; had been associated with Adelong all her life. Born Gertrude Annie Fallon, daughter of a well-known family, early in life she married the late Michael Cowan and together they made the hotel business their career. They conducted several hotels, in Adelong and during their many years as a business couple they built up a clientele of friends and customers who never swerved in their allegiance.
Upon the death of her husband, something over 20 years ago, Mrs. Cowan continued on alone and her hotel, The Royal, had a very good reputation under her guidance. It has been the official. C.T. A. house ever since she took it on.
To Mr. and Mrs. Cowan were born two children — Kathleen (Mrs. Foley) and Ken, who is now a member of the Police Force. Over the past few years the family worked together running their business until such time as Mrs. Cowan, who had not been en joying the best of health, leased the hotel and went to live privately in Sydney. However, as things were not going on as they should, she was forced to come back into business again and resumed the occupancy of her hotel. It is only
a few months ago that she leased it again and prepared to retire, but unfortunately years of ease after a very full life was not to be her portion.
Mrs. Cowan suffered a stroke from which she never really recovered and she passed away on the morning of the 16th. Her body was interred in the R.C. portion of the Adelong Cemetery, the Rev. Father Collins conducting the last sad rites.
To the sorrowing family we offer our sincere condol ences in the great loss they have sustained.
