Michael Francis Fallon, Roman Catholic bishop

Born: 1867.05.17 (Canada)

Ordained Priest: 1894.07.29

Consecrated Bishop: 1910.04.25

Fifth Bishop of London, Ontario, Canada (1909.12.14 – 1931.02.22)

Died: 1931.02.22 († 63)

Most Rev. Michael J. Fallon, was the eldest son of Dominic and Bridget Egan Fallon.

After graduating from the University of Ottawa in 1889, he entered the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and after studies in Holland, he completed his theological studies in Rome in 1894, the year he was ordained a Catholic Priest. He was professor of English, then vice-rector of the University of Ottawa, before becoming pastor of parishes in Ottawa from 1888-1901. He was involved as coach of the School's Rugby team, which went undefeated while he was coach.

In 1903, Fallon was appointed first rector of the American Province of the Oblates and was named rector of Holy Angels Church in Buffalo, New York, where he founded Holy Angels Academy. During his stay in Buffalo he also became an American citizen.

He was appointed the fifth bishop of London, Ontario, on 14 December 1909, and consecrated bishop on 25 April the following year.

Bishop Fallon was a very influential leader, stressing the importance of education and was also involved in the political affairs of his country. He founded St. Peter Seminary in London, Ontario in 1912.

He became the leader of Ontario's Irish Catholics who were endeavouring to keep Franco-Ontarians "in their place," ie, trying to prevent the acceptance of bilingual schooling. During his more than 20 years as bishop, Fallon stood at the centre of the ethnolinguistic fighting during the Ontario Schools Question 1912-27.

Mgr Fallon died in February 1931, a hero to many Irish Catholics but a demon to Franco-Ontarians. He was buried in the crypt beneath the Sanctuary in St-Thomas Aquinas Chapel, in St-Peter's Seminary, London, Ontario; his gravestone can be seen in the floor in front of the tabernacle.
